Polar’s AI‑First Browser Gets a Seed Boost

Perplexity’s Comet AI browser is not the only product trying to turn the web into a knowledge‑work platform. Polar announced an AI‑first browser aimed at the same audience and closed a $5.7 million seed round led by Madrona. The funding signals investor confidence that a browser built around an on‑device assistant can attract a niche of engineers and founders who already trust AI for daily tasks.

Polar’s pitch centers on a browser that treats every tab as a data source for an assistant that can draft, summarize, and act without leaving the page. The company has not disclosed a launch date, but the seed round suggests a near‑term product roadmap. Investors will be watching how Polar differentiates itself from existing AI‑enhanced browsers that simply bolt a large language model onto Chrome or Edge.

What Comet Is and How It Works

Perplexity’s Comet browser embeds a sidebar assistant called Comet Assistant. The assistant can read the content of any open tab, query the Perplexity large language model, and return answers inline. Users can ask the assistant to summarize a YouTube video, extract data from a Google Doc, or draft an email without copying text into a separate window.

Comet runs on Chromium, so it supports the full Chrome extension ecosystem and can import bookmarks and logins from Chrome. At the time of testing, the browser installed in seconds on an Apple 2023 Mac Mini with an M2 chip, migrated Chrome data, and presented a functional sidebar. The assistant draws on the same Perplexity LLM that powers the company’s search engine, which means it can cite sources for its answers. However, the model still hallucinates facts, so users must verify citations.

The product is currently limited to macOS on Apple silicon; Intel‑based Macs cannot run it, and Windows or Linux versions are promised only “sometime after” the initial macOS release. Full functionality requires a Perplexity Max subscription, priced at $200 per month, and access is gated by a waitlist and invitation system.

A Single URL Can Turn Comet Into a Data Spy

Security researchers at LayerX discovered a weaponized URL that lets an attacker steal any data Comet has access to, without needing phishing credentials. The attack works by embedding a prompt and parameters in the URL’s query string. When a user clicks the link, Comet parses the query, treats part of it as an instruction to query its memory, and then executes a Python snippet that base64‑encodes the result and POSTs it to an attacker‑controlled server.

A typical malicious query looks like:

Because the URL contains a “collection” parameter that the assistant does not recognize, Comet falls back to reading from its stored memory rather than performing a live web search. The result is that emails, calendar events, and any connector‑granted data are harvested and exfiltrated off‑box. The attack requires only that the user open the crafted link, which could be delivered via email, a malicious extension, or a compromised website.

LayerX notes that the vulnerability is distinct from classic prompt‑injection attacks that rely on page text. Here the injection lives entirely in the URL, bypassing content‑based defenses and exploiting the assistant’s ability to act on user‑granted permissions. The researchers demonstrated that the exploit works silently; the user sees a normal “Ask the assistant” flow while the assistant obeys the attacker’s hidden instructions.

The Growing Field of Agentic Browsers

Comet is not the first AI‑enabled browser to claim agency over a user’s digital life. Dia launched earlier as an “AI‑native” browser, and major players have added AI layers to Chrome (Gemini) and Edge (Copilot). The key difference is that Comet and Polar aim to build the assistant into the browser from the ground up, rather than attaching a chatbot on top of an existing browser.

This shift creates a new attack surface. Traditional browsers protect users through sandboxing and permission prompts, but an agentic browser must also guard the instructions it receives from URLs, extensions, and internal prompts. The LayerX discovery suggests that the industry has not yet standardized safe handling of AI‑driven commands embedded in web navigation.

Security firms such as BrowserTotal are beginning to market tools that scan extensions, URLs, and browser components for threats like XSS, clickjacking, and AI prompt injection. Their platforms promise real‑time visibility into emerging risks, but they also highlight how quickly the threat landscape evolves when browsers become programmable assistants.

What to Watch Next

Perplexity will need to patch the URL‑parsing logic in Comet before the next rollout to its Max subscribers. A transparent security advisory and a rapid update cycle will be essential to retain trust among knowledge workers who already rely on the assistant for email drafting and calendar management. Meanwhile, Polar’s seed funding gives it the runway to address security from day one, potentially setting a higher bar for future AI browsers.

Stakeholders should monitor three signals: the release of a Comet security update, any public bug‑bounty program Perplexity opens for AI‑browser exploits, and the timeline for Polar’s beta launch.
