Donut Lab, a startup that generated attention earlier this year with its solid-state battery claims, is now facing a criminal whistleblower complaint. The complaint, filed by Lauri Peltola, former Chief Commercial Officer of Nordic Nano, a partner company involved in Donut Lab’s manufacturing process, alleges that Donut Lab’s promises of energy density and longevity are questionable.
According to reports from the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, the complaint describes Donut Lab’s claims as “astonishing — and suspicious.” Peltola claims that Donut Lab lacks the production capacity it previously claimed and that its technology is not yet ready for mass production. The complaint cites concerns about Donut Lab’s readiness to enter the market with its solid-state battery technology.
Donut Lab’s CEO, Marko Lehtimäki, and Nordic Nano’s CEO, Esa Parjanen, have responded to the allegations. A joint statement from Donut Lab and Nordic Nano denied any wrongdoing or misleading of investors, questioning the complainant’s understanding of battery technology and development work.
The allegations against Donut Lab raise important questions about the company’s claims and its readiness to enter the market. The investigation into the complaint will likely have significant implications for the industry.
